What a wonderful time we have had this week visiting Schwerkolt Cottage in Mitcham!! We have found out sooooo much about the Schwerkolt family, how they lived, the tools they used and what their house looked liked inside and outside.
Did you know that the chamber pot can be called a guzzunda because it goes under the bed!!
Did you know that the Schwerkolts’s had lots of orchards growing many varieties of fruit and sold them at the markets!
Did you know that the areas of Mitcham and BoxHill made bricks way back when and that many of the bricks made in Mitcham have been used in the pathway around the cottage that is still standing today!
This was such a great way to begin investigating our history unit of inquiry. We are looking forward to finding out more about the changes in our local area.
A huge thank you to the parents who came on the excursion with us, we really appreciate your assistance on the days we went.
